La cultura hispana: Understanding Hispanic culture through theater

Alisa Smith, Harvey Stone, Lynda Heath, Tama Ferrara, Michaela Garrison — Jamestown High and Matoaka Elementary 2nd, 3rd, 9th-12th grades. This multi-faceted grant gave elementary and high school students an opportunity to work together on a theater production highlighting some annual events and music of Hispanic countries to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Hispanic cultures. Evidence of growth was noted in the areas of improved social skills and motivation as well as academic gains.100% of all the participating students acquired a better understanding of the Hispanic culture and language.The second and third grade students demonstrated a mastery of oral language and reading skills taught to them by the high school students by performing with at least 90% accuracy in listening and speaking activities, oral communication via the theater production, journal writing, and other class activities. The high school students demonstrated a mastery of oral language, reading, and writing skills by performing with at least 95% accuracy in reading comprehension, listening and speaking activities, oral communication via the theater production, and other class activities. Additionally, the high school students served as role models and gained an understanding of what it takes to prepare, practice and execute academic lessons and an understanding of what it takes to develop and produce a theater production.
